</div><div style="text-align: center;">Not sure how long I'll be gone, where I'll go, or if I'll be back.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">I'm just not feeling inspired to post. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">But that will probably change soon.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">More on that later.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Tonight I just wanted to share that the house is quiet and I was up crocheting,</div><div style="text-align: center;">when all of a sudden, unconsciously, I started talking to God.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">I'm trying to remember a time when that has happened before,</div><div style="text-align: center;">but I can't.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">My hands were occupied, and my mind free.</div><div style="text-align: center;">And I didn't want to stop...</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6Y3bXR97rHh2BXzC2IDCIg5NE4x4z7-L1Ez6VLwqpdM2GVTLdBmVi0RAwPYEVjttdLJdE__DTCS35KwEwvJmAKjDP_5nlcCS1UcZlm5JF2H8MGXsrw2L8PlaIpojECcvisHIabb1X04k/s1600/DSC_0044.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6Y3bXR97rHh2BXzC2IDCIg5NE4x4z7-L1Ez6VLwqpdM2GVTLdBmVi0RAwPYEVjttdLJdE__DTCS35KwEwvJmAKjDP_5nlcCS1UcZlm5JF2H8MGXsrw2L8PlaIpojECcvisHIabb1X04k/s640/DSC_0044.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">But I ran out of yarn.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">There is more crochet in my future - for sure.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Blessings to you all tonight.</div>Daphnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04708813420701082954noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7842248750488200026.post-31155971072656444862011-07-08T14:49:00.000-07:002011-07-08T14:49:34.618-07:00Putting my (needle?) where my mouth is?<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Hand sewing - on the go.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

More and more I feel the need to learn/value/pass on this skill set that WAS so commonplace that in quilting/sewing patterns and books from eras gone by, there aren't even descriptions or explanations of the process of sewing by hand (how to hold the needle, fabric and thread, etc.).</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUPO2Bp6HSyOGDpACllJhFhUuafjQ0AnQ-hcMFYdtfaWo3qlUo-MBN_8JrPshHch99SXBq18XIvUC5EZ5TY7J9hqY-ZkLS0FTcAoioOK4ai8r3tLxwLpOsAYkjm1-WFc-71lXAZ8n1rb8/s1600/DSC_0968.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUPO2Bp6HSyOGDpACllJhFhUuafjQ0AnQ-hcMFYdtfaWo3qlUo-MBN_8JrPshHch99SXBq18XIvUC5EZ5TY7J9hqY-ZkLS0FTcAoioOK4ai8r3tLxwLpOsAYkjm1-WFc-71lXAZ8n1rb8/s640/DSC_0968.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><span class="Apple-style-span"></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">So what images come to mind when I say "handiwork". Blue hair, shawls, hot tea and cats? Umm, I hope not - not that any of those things are bad! But that's mostly what came to my mind for a long time - because I didn't really know more than one or two people my age doing the kinds of "crafts" I was doing. What is handiwork anyway? Webster's II defines it as "1. Work done by hand. 2. Something accomplished by a single person's efforts. 3. The product of a person's work or actions." Well, that's a pretty broad definition - I associate handiwork with anything fabric+thread+needle related that is done by hand. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggaoRSgq3qUzJr477C_4sBLbk7z2gFsWoD5dq1KRAhep398KCJw8gJ40NH-aMx0xZbi6m6eN7MxaLcPsHIp2ZYJo90boDKNm_bdibnj-SHvJi0YMBOrLPC3JPA-2ugLoNK-35RI87LQLk/s1600/DSC_0464.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggaoRSgq3qUzJr477C_4sBLbk7z2gFsWoD5dq1KRAhep398KCJw8gJ40NH-aMx0xZbi6m6eN7MxaLcPsHIp2ZYJo90boDKNm_bdibnj-SHvJi0YMBOrLPC3JPA-2ugLoNK-35RI87LQLk/s640/DSC_0464.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><span class="Apple-style-span"></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">Please don't misunderstand me, I am not anti-sewing machine. I LOVE my machine. I just happen to LOVE hand sewing more. It's portable, quiet, precise (I can sew on the machine, but am much less likely to screw something up if I sew it by hand) ;), s l o w e r (see precise) and there is just something special about sitting down with a needle and thread and all the love that goes into the finished product. Natalie Chanin's books are great resources for hand sewists and a new hand sewing book <a href="http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Sewn-by-Hand/Susan-Wasinger/e/9781600596681/?itm=1&USRI=sewn+by+hand#Overview">Sewn By Hand</a> by Susan Wasinger is out, which I have not seen yet, but would love to! While patterns and books might not be specifically labeled for hand sewing, there is no reason they can't be used that way! I've heard a lot of people who come to my booth at the craft shows say things like, "Oh, I wish I could sew, but I don't have a machine". I try to tell them that they don't need one! It seems that the slowness and "make do attitude" is just not part of our society anymore.</span><br />

</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">This is where some huge role models for my handiwork cause come in - Natalie Chanin (of <a href="http://www.alabamachanin.com/">Alabama Chanin</a> - I spoke about her <a href="http://sunrisefolk.blogspot.com/2011/03/crafty-goings-on-and-their-inspirations.html">here</a>), <a href="http://www.annamariahorner.blogspot.com/">Anna Maria Horner</a> and Susan of <a href="http://www.plays-with-needles.blogspot.com/">Plays With Needles</a>. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">Hand sewing is what Natalie and her company are all about (and producing items slowly and locally using sustainable methods and talented sewers right here in the states). </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">Recently, Anna Maria has talked about the importance of hand sewing and I believe she does quite a bit of it herself. She <a href="http://annamariahorner.blogspot.com/2011/06/probably-large-topic-for-summer-friday.html">talked about</a> the dynamic of having a business and handsewing/making and whether the two together are possible. As small as Sunrise Folk is, it's something I think about a lot, too. I am increasingly inclined to take the plunge and go mostly, if not all, hand sewn in the shop. Anna Maria also posted a <a href="http://annamariahorner.blogspot.com/2011/05/making-me-think-today.html">video</a> (courtesy of Etsy) that discusses a dying art and it really got me thinking about how important it is to keep these art forms alive. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQ5dU4tIRtvik2PcdpMDfA4_Tm-UQxXC_iHbYRsxt8eEonzuA4EYZuUGksDGIg-T8zocPAnQ3rorG2UMC6lPBTZQk_N1FfBKx6q0Z86M7QUZUxYsygPZ72RpdOBb2-RG_i-I9CZoSTqzE/s1600/DSCN0776.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQ5dU4tIRtvik2PcdpMDfA4_Tm-UQxXC_iHbYRsxt8eEonzuA4EYZuUGksDGIg-T8zocPAnQ3rorG2UMC6lPBTZQk_N1FfBKx6q0Z86M7QUZUxYsygPZ72RpdOBb2-RG_i-I9CZoSTqzE/s640/DSCN0776.JPG" width="480" /></a></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-size: 13px;"><br />
</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">Then, Susan had a <a href="http://plays-with-needles.blogspot.com/2011/05/too-much-to-think.html">wonderful post</a> about the time it takes to do handiwork - how most people don't understand why we do this, but how important the work is (and in her case the work is amazing ARTwork!). </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><br />

</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">For quilters out there, I am quite sure you all know who <a href="http://www.jinnybeyer.com/">Jinny Beyer</a> is (I didn't know until a few weeks ago!). If you don't know, she is a prolific hand quilter - she pieces and quilts every one of her quilts by hand. And they are AMAZING! She's written several books, has a website stocked with info and free patterns, has a fabric line and even has handy quilting tools for sale. I recently purchased <a href="http://www.jinnybeyer.com/ax_commerce/detail.cfm?productID=19605903F9A057EE1FC5841390C7C222">Quiltmaking By Hand</a> and I'm SO glad I did! It is a treasure trove of information, not just about hand quilting, but color selection, pattern drafting, hand sewing and skill building. One thing I am incredibly impressed with about Jinny is how 'free' she is in her instructions/sewing philosophy. She never says "you must do it this way or you are wrong". Quite the opposite, she says there is NO wrong way. *Love!*</span><br />

<br />
We live pretty far from family, so our "work & church family" joined us for Wy's actual party. I didn't want the grandparents to miss out on the fun though, so I sent them a party in a box!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMpMBztdR82ET5rPeRfd84Me7owJR-EH_Ls2__YeZKiBFGXwC_-6OPUpf-z6zBx2ageW6dS_DHuiX7jlpX_sNgjhSGly0MHN07mKO6cwCRVYOEigbLpS3VAM3EyrlLcyIJSYlh2dosSjM/s1600/DSC_0771.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMpMBztdR82ET5rPeRfd84Me7owJR-EH_Ls2__YeZKiBFGXwC_-6OPUpf-z6zBx2ageW6dS_DHuiX7jlpX_sNgjhSGly0MHN07mKO6cwCRVYOEigbLpS3VAM3EyrlLcyIJSYlh2dosSjM/s640/DSC_0771.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">(please excuse the mess behind the actual birthday stuff!)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Since they couldn't join us, I wanted to include little details from the party that would make them feel like they <i>had</i> been there. I was going to be printing several sets of pictures (for Grandparents, Great Grandmas and Grand Godmother), so I sent them to Walgreens to be printed. So much easier!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Believe it or not, that Bisquick box in the background is not part of the "mess", it's one of the boxes I used to send the package. See how to make it 'sendable' <a href="http://wildolive.blogspot.com/2011/02/sponsor-diy-sunrise-folk.html">here</a>.</div><br />

<br />
And I don't really even have a post today.<br />
<br />
But - we are getting a better/faster/awesomer internet connection in a few days which <i>hopefully</i> means this whole blogging thing will be <i>easier</i> for me and I will be able to contribute a little more to the internets.<br />
<br />
So, until then -<br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">So it's been awhile huh?</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Sorry about that. We were on vacation with my family up in Michigan. Not somewhere we normally </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">go to vacation, but this time was a little different. We spent the week on Mackinac Island (pronounced mack-ea-naw for those of us not from the region). There are no cars on the island - not even scooters or golf carts (except on the golf course...silly goofers!), just horse drawn carriages and bicycles!</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">And it was chilly, even down right </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: blue;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #6fa8dc;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">cold</span></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"> </span></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">part of the time. <i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">A few milestones were reached during our stay in the island... the first was that my husband and I celebrated our 4th wedding anniversary. Go us! ;) The little one stayed with Grandma and Grandpa while we walked down to a lovely dinner at a </span><a href="http://www.iroquoishotel.com/Dining/dining.asp"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">restaurant</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"> overlooking the water. It was perfect for us, beachy colors inside a window filled dining room (J pointed out that the color of the walls was the same color as our wedding cake!), yummy food and happy and friendly staff. </span></span></i><br />

</span> </span></i><br />
<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Speaking of sewing...I didn't get much of any of THAT done. Which is a bit of a bummer. But lots of time was spent with family so I really can't complain! I took along my paper piecing teaser from the first issue of CraftSanity Magazine that I had yet to dive into and gave it a whirl. At first, I really could not understand why people say it's addicting because it seemed like a whole lot of work to me. But looking at the finished piece now, I really want to do more! And I hoping to incorporate them into bags and items where they are not usually found. Mostly though, it was that bathroom floor. So so beautiful! </span></span></i><br />
<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br />
</span> </span></i><br />
<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">I have been very inspired by the slow making/ slow sewing/ not sure what to call it - but the hand sewing (as in a needle and thread) talk that has been going on these days (</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">more explanation coming soon...</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">). While working some late hours a few weeks ago, I finished piecing my first Alabama Chanin skirt! I LOVE it and am happily looking forward to making more!!! I put the elastic on while we were on vacation. It doesn't look pretty, but it does it's job and that's really all I can ask of it, I think. I don't have a picture of the whole skirt (<i>yet</i>), but here is the stencil before the reverse applique was finished. (note: a few weeks ago my wonderful husband found freezer paper for me - I was beginning to think they didn't sell it in New Orleans, I couldn't find it ANYWHERE. J to the rescue!! This was my first freezer paper stencil and I was so happy with how it turned out!!!) (note(2): I did not draw the boat, I found it in Google images) (I think that's the last note...)</span></span></i><br />
<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Look at that, you got me all caught up in talking about sewing and I haven't even mentioned the other milestone! ;) Our little Wy is walking! Definitely can't put my finger on an exact time or place but I know that when we got there he could only take a few steps before he fell down and now he walks across rooms and down hallways with no problem at all! Things are happening quickly - I'm so glad we were able to spend the whole week with him to see all this unfold. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Alright, I suppose that's enough for now, don't you think? Until next time...</span><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I sewed a bandana tie and some denim (from scraps from a denim shirt-turned-apron) onto a plain onsie we already had for a cowboy outfit.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiN2uXIZj-NoEYHUTWPoEG3sVCu5U7BvYpMKMsEF0z3NRbYEGulFVvarFq3-hT1IWCoehsn0kysStAo-wHyV4cz9wi54AvSUXiUyT49hqiQZExfWkmxPl-6fn_uoU3FOh-zYoN5CDhpyF0/s1600/DSCN1380.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiN2uXIZj-NoEYHUTWPoEG3sVCu5U7BvYpMKMsEF0z3NRbYEGulFVvarFq3-hT1IWCoehsn0kysStAo-wHyV4cz9wi54AvSUXiUyT49hqiQZExfWkmxPl-6fn_uoU3FOh-zYoN5CDhpyF0/s640/DSCN1380.JPG" width="480" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">And to complete the outfit, Grandma found a cowboy hat that fit perfectly.</div><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">We tried to leave it low-key with a pot luck get together, cupcakes and no gifts.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Somewhere I have better pictures, but since I can't find them, these will do. Michaels had tissue paper with cow print, denim and a bandana print (score!) that I used to make pom poms (see them hanging there above the island?).</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhtcLun_5dGjfD4au2vZzmwAeAkirlNQtcmexPy8iv0Y1gmNNUXRZJOH-v54k1LfNIXxwl1ZLxaWUxtT22rCBLbllBmmTdRtx3zEFA4qxsMWafwR1ca5eEHQcoBu1X8SuwAqkVO55RBY8/s1600/DSCN1419.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhtcLun_5dGjfD4au2vZzmwAeAkirlNQtcmexPy8iv0Y1gmNNUXRZJOH-v54k1LfNIXxwl1ZLxaWUxtT22rCBLbllBmmTdRtx3zEFA4qxsMWafwR1ca5eEHQcoBu1X8SuwAqkVO55RBY8/s640/DSCN1419.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Michaels also had a large assortment of colorful bandanas. A few pinking shear cuts, felt letters, glue and twill tape and a Happy Birthday banner was done.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I, of course, needed an apron for the occasion and World Market had a perfect set of dishtowels to make one. I roughly used the pattern in Apronology (one I think I will return to again and again).</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXMhFjBWiqkO0qMs_MprkVf-h9xg9IbfcfdlUSsMfiuEpvG3VVQn677p90zxax66PtzZSXR5-UzjDK2KWoS7pyVv5hF5LOrV2mEmBLYZ-Knv5KnXzD20XhmRhH50G-1AeHwplsOM18GaQ/s1600/DSC_0754.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXMhFjBWiqkO0qMs_MprkVf-h9xg9IbfcfdlUSsMfiuEpvG3VVQn677p90zxax66PtzZSXR5-UzjDK2KWoS7pyVv5hF5LOrV2mEmBLYZ-Knv5KnXzD20XhmRhH50G-1AeHwplsOM18GaQ/s640/DSC_0754.jpg" width="428" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Wy LOVES bubbles (in fact bubbles was one of his first words), so i really wanted to have bubbles as favors to have out for people to use during the party and after. I had the hardest time finding small containers of bubbles that weren't wedding favors. In fact, I didn't find any other ones so I tried to disguise the wedding part with start stickers and by putting them in glass jars covered in cowboy scrapbook paper. I'm not sure if people bought it, but they did blow bubbles and that's all that really matters I suppose.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Ta Da! Here is a picture of my new business cards. The lovely Teresa is modeling one of the shirt aprons as a little peek into what the shop has to offer (this was one of the photos from the Etsy listing for this apron). I was so pleased with how they turned out - I think I might have a whole bunch made...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFAa3t7SJOb-KmyX_SmgD4FGg2cO10csxN1HK50p7CTXw6m8Jic2IhFSaNwncsQColOZDGlxC8hnCiWPT5-gsKK3r_7oAQjBNR6ghF2OpbDI9F4MD68EdPRubz_hJGL-yfZYPTfW0QaHI/s1600/DSCN1466.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFAa3t7SJOb-KmyX_SmgD4FGg2cO10csxN1HK50p7CTXw6m8Jic2IhFSaNwncsQColOZDGlxC8hnCiWPT5-gsKK3r_7oAQjBNR6ghF2OpbDI9F4MD68EdPRubz_hJGL-yfZYPTfW0QaHI/s640/DSCN1466.JPG" width="480" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">And this is one of the hair clip holders. I used the shapes buttons in pages (the mac version of word), on the business card templates. We printed them on the pre-cut business card paper, from there it was easy to just cut two slits in the middle of the card, sort of thread the back part of the hair clip through the slits and clip it on. I will also be making more of these!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Have a safe rest of your Memorial Day - and take some time to remember what this day means. Not just family time and barbecues, but the sacrifices of our soldiers, policemen and firemen. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

It was the end of the day and we were all about ready to pack up. Richey (I think that was his name) came over to see how the day had gone for us. Then he looked at all my stuff and gave me three compliments:</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">The first was when he asked how old I was, "What are you, 22?" Oh! Thank you good Sir, no, I am not 22 (just this morning I realized that I told him I was 27, but I'm not 27 (but I'm close) - either way, it was a compliment!)</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">The second was when he said he could see that I put my heart into all the things I make. (so nice to hear from someone who doesn't even know me!)</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">And the one that touched me the most - he told me "There aren't many women like you anymore". At first it sounded weird to me and I was ready to get defensive, but once I thought about it for a minute, I took it as a <i>huge</i> compliment because that's just what I'm trying to be - I'm trying to be ME in a world that does not appreciate the values I strive for or the work that I do.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">I wanted to share these with you all because if you're reading this, I think Richey would have paid YOU the same compliments. (Okay, maybe not the age one...) </div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">I see the heart that <i>you</i> put into what you all do. </div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">And There aren't many women like YOU anymore - thank you for being kindred spirits. We need to stick together ladies!</div>Daphnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04708813420701082954noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7842248750488200026.post-19518142033126511202011-05-16T14:45:00.000-07:002011-05-16T14:45:23.624-07:00Art Walk!It was a BEAUTIFUL day on Saturday. Just perfect. I was in a sweater most all day, in Southern Louisiana, in mid-May. Weird. Weird, but wonderful. <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOl8uzGa1L6EPRE8cKjU2ESdDcTzLsUt9aBCX_NZN11stl8m9pdJD5gWCiGZOJMRYgQ_DYxjT16R-xlCGa5T1k9gGeYF-6AYMQ6rPUEuTXU7vaTktPaXZ1wC_OZ6ox_WXYXAs6cdsL4mQ/s1600/DSC_0706.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOl8uzGa1L6EPRE8cKjU2ESdDcTzLsUt9aBCX_NZN11stl8m9pdJD5gWCiGZOJMRYgQ_DYxjT16R-xlCGa5T1k9gGeYF-6AYMQ6rPUEuTXU7vaTktPaXZ1wC_OZ6ox_WXYXAs6cdsL4mQ/s640/DSC_0706.JPG" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br />
</span></span></span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>And although the weather was lovely, there were not many people out and about enjoying it at the Art Walk. Which is all to say, it was a pretty slow day. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7Fc50SMD8WPo2O3iBm9vdoO9UO8H9cOi1BYqblROkKlE0m6HnDlieDW4rGsBMgasAg4TWeMQi4ayp8kY2MxREYCZ_YrlZR5YfQnt9ftsAw7lubVikump_tszYHZfgEu1Ni3Oyrz5hxcQ/s1600/DSC_0705.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7Fc50SMD8WPo2O3iBm9vdoO9UO8H9cOi1BYqblROkKlE0m6HnDlieDW4rGsBMgasAg4TWeMQi4ayp8kY2MxREYCZ_YrlZR5YfQnt9ftsAw7lubVikump_tszYHZfgEu1Ni3Oyrz5hxcQ/s640/DSC_0705.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br />
But I met some sweet people, got to spend a day chatting with my friend Teresa (Thank you Teresa!) and we sat outside in the shade all day. Oh, and I did make some sales too. ;)<br />
<br />
This was my third time selling my 'wares' in a booth at a show and I could feel a difference. Everything went a lot smoother than the last two times. It was a nice feeling.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwMZ94i9DoYcZ1nHQxo9-on0BbChY6VWp2FuencrDDFkY8_olrKQjIYl1Kzp0ZPNNJfDhMINwzN-LU1OUc3a9WVpggsQ2BNgz1Kf__aUXeF2iBqM267U13djFk7nZS_59ha67YZYIx8HE/s1600/DSC_0696.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwMZ94i9DoYcZ1nHQxo9-on0BbChY6VWp2FuencrDDFkY8_olrKQjIYl1Kzp0ZPNNJfDhMINwzN-LU1OUc3a9WVpggsQ2BNgz1Kf__aUXeF2iBqM267U13djFk7nZS_59ha67YZYIx8HE/s640/DSC_0696.JPG" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">the table set-up practice Friday night (minus the cool hair clip cards...they had yet to be printed)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>Up top there, you will have noticed my new sign. I LOVE it! I would LOVE it more, however, if I knew what I was doing with that whole quilting business, and it layed more flat. I think I'm going to rip out the binding and redo it sometime in the near future. With everything else going on around here, it was one of those things that intimidated me (the sign) because I had a picture in my head and I knew the likely hood of me screwing it up was pretty high, so I was putting it off for as long as I could. I finally mustered up some confidence and minus the frumpy middle saggy bit, I'm quite pleased with it. It mostly looks like what I had envisioned!<br />
<br />
I also made up some new business cards (thank you to my dear husband who helped me figure out how to use the Mac template late Friday night before the show Saturday...) <i>and </i>some cards to display the hair clips. Another one of those ideas that have been floating around in my head for some time now. I just used a business card template and the business card paper that is already perforated that you run through your printer, and voila! Semi-profesional product displays!<br />
<br />
Work is ramping up around here for all the water that is coming down the Mississippi these days, so I'm not sure how this week will go - all I know is that I need Saturday off because we are having a birthday party for my now 1 year old! (Can you believe it? He's already ONE. Crazy talk people!) More on the decorations and such for that soon...Daphnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04708813420701082954noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7842248750488200026.post-13098482152524529422011-05-10T18:14:00.000-07:002011-05-10T18:16:11.321-07:00Oh my!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzlqhHzblrkvzAgxsKMajRqmrpLcMIBSDaQyBGQRVPqaQDGFTW0GRcUqMY3OpXnQt9lCvVPTc2Iq8wYgHz0KO9OjhUJKfEbTXjtTVA8rxUUbkvjb4hjP2JshEopn6ejW2b94nyDR1UkYY/s1600/DSC_0666.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzlqhHzblrkvzAgxsKMajRqmrpLcMIBSDaQyBGQRVPqaQDGFTW0GRcUqMY3OpXnQt9lCvVPTc2Iq8wYgHz0KO9OjhUJKfEbTXjtTVA8rxUUbkvjb4hjP2JshEopn6ejW2b94nyDR1UkYY/s640/DSC_0666.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Has it really been that long... I haven't said "hello" since Easter???<br />
<br />
I'm sorry! It's not that things haven't been happening 'round here - it's just that there has been <i>so much</i> happening 'round here that I haven't put my bottom in a chair long enough to tell you all about it!<br />
<br />
The Gretna Art Walk is this weekend, so I probably won't be updating you until that is over because I still have a bit to get ready! But there will be pictures galore and a few tales of woe mixed in with a whole lot of tales of success. <br />
<br />
Don't you worry, I'll be back soon. :)<br />
<br />
Until then, Blessings-Daphnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04708813420701082954noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7842248750488200026.post-52495740582333487682011-04-24T09:39:00.000-07:002011-04-24T09:39:16.427-07:00Happy Easter!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgloOseClTprP0bfwoWzDEjMr0a2awnpiQthycTBtwbwQo1A0cLvaBbLahgITVEx7VnVAT14N3kvPX3wu3wE8cbvEcN7ztob0ur-8GVOeHR91g_bpppJh7uclHotwDkPrAVmhq3syELoxM/s1600/DSC_0018.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="382" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgloOseClTprP0bfwoWzDEjMr0a2awnpiQthycTBtwbwQo1A0cLvaBbLahgITVEx7VnVAT14N3kvPX3wu3wE8cbvEcN7ztob0ur-8GVOeHR91g_bpppJh7uclHotwDkPrAVmhq3syELoxM/s640/DSC_0018.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">I have to warn you that this is another one that rates extremely high on the "uncomfortable meter", so I'm not sure how long it will be up. Here goes...</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">My "quiet time" reading, praying, etc. has been severely lacking to non-existant lately. Yesterday an image came to me as I made the conscious decision not to read/pray/etc., but to watch Netflix and cut up shirts to make aprons. I was walking past the living room - and that's when it came to me.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Jesus was sitting on the couch <i>waiting for me</i>. (Not in a scary, stalker kind of way, but a friend/lover/I-want-to-be-around-you kind of way) </div><div style="text-align: center;">I saw Him there and I looked at Him for a long minute. Then I turned away and went to do something totally irrelevant.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjS2dWvvfpaa_yKQPdTlpXETeeS08Msuqu7YfQi2CT5Sa6DKpVfUyKWDeDaE17UiadPFb18aGuCN4Dfz_-ihDv7WH1paj4eDWQoS2h-RiItL216EFlu2UCjH35mAfuFSYrG2vu95XeAg3E/s1600/Photo+on+2011-04-19+at+21.49+%25233.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjS2dWvvfpaa_yKQPdTlpXETeeS08Msuqu7YfQi2CT5Sa6DKpVfUyKWDeDaE17UiadPFb18aGuCN4Dfz_-ihDv7WH1paj4eDWQoS2h-RiItL216EFlu2UCjH35mAfuFSYrG2vu95XeAg3E/s640/Photo+on+2011-04-19+at+21.49+%25233.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">Today I came and sat down on the couch. I am so glad I did.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Thank you God, for waiting so long for me.</div>Daphnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04708813420701082954noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7842248750488200026.post-11579446626642137232011-04-18T20:25:00.000-07:002011-04-18T20:29:26.487-07:00Pinwheels<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I think I've caught the quilting bug...perhaps it is because I listen to so many quilting podcasts, or it could be the recent discovery of a quilting shop in the area that is so very quaint and nice! (if you are ever in the New Orleans area, check out <a href="http://quiltedowl.com/">The Quilted Owl</a>...well worth the trip!)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Whatever the source, I have indeed got the preverbal bee in the preverbal bonnet. (sorry, I've been watching a lot of Psych, and I start to talk funny when I do that - there is random fact #8 about me, to follow up on yesterdays post...)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">So, where were we...ah, yes, quilting.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I used scraps from shirts I have turned into aprons. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I've seen buttons/widget (what are those things really called?) about <a href="http://r0ssie.blogspot.com/2010/05/process-pledge.html">The Process Pledge</a>, and I think it's a very neat idea - so I'm going to try to remember to take more pictures during the actual making.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Oh, and multi-colored Christmas lights (who are we kidding here folks, these are YEAR ROUND lights) are my F-A-V-O-R-I-T-E (random fact #9, I'm on a roll here!) (and you thought this was going to be about quilting...)</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWVTZZrGgwnEilMdiAcIogQgQyAWv8xqvtqW7a0itvUtMPQIs8xS_0y-I4vXfpPN31lSFp77OAZ3dOmmexMPM6RFZNuPt65E8vbLhxH2nK7CjaBENOjO7xgBI5pQZkBjCpspiKdSoT74s/s1600/DSCN1266.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWVTZZrGgwnEilMdiAcIogQgQyAWv8xqvtqW7a0itvUtMPQIs8xS_0y-I4vXfpPN31lSFp77OAZ3dOmmexMPM6RFZNuPt65E8vbLhxH2nK7CjaBENOjO7xgBI5pQZkBjCpspiKdSoT74s/s640/DSCN1266.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Not perfect, but also not too shabby for my first try. I love the colors together. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">That is what I think it so fun about using vintage/thrifted materials - there is no buying a whole line together, or coordinating fabrics. You just have to make it up as you go along.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-wi_MHaG9NsxxI7xBrRnUNCqrUxEa2fWyUV91gNgLi4T_jIrRJT2v4CZ3ogzhgnPgwbxJbLPP8UZvpTZdUzY-49jvW0RU22em5gzYe2ixflVYB5URClujtXURyO4smqiA_IHEDWHRMqY/s1600/DSCN1268.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-wi_MHaG9NsxxI7xBrRnUNCqrUxEa2fWyUV91gNgLi4T_jIrRJT2v4CZ3ogzhgnPgwbxJbLPP8UZvpTZdUzY-49jvW0RU22em5gzYe2ixflVYB5URClujtXURyO4smqiA_IHEDWHRMqY/s640/DSCN1268.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">So there I was, with 2 random and slightly imperfect blocks. I am a function person, so it's difficult for me to make something just for practice. I need to "make" something. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Enter in scraps of a vintage sheet....and hello coasters!</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRveg88r2m6Ql_TsQdVDOMpiQW0DMt6quDd2HhVEXUJzFnN9olE5jYVugC_CsU0XuD1cdqamXucyKlS49oGtNkBqJickrWI60GPOXxr8VvkMD60_KLKL7fkn6XMzJAEwaxhAQkbwlG1D0/s1600/DSCN1269.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRveg88r2m6Ql_TsQdVDOMpiQW0DMt6quDd2HhVEXUJzFnN9olE5jYVugC_CsU0XuD1cdqamXucyKlS49oGtNkBqJickrWI60GPOXxr8VvkMD60_KLKL7fkn6XMzJAEwaxhAQkbwlG1D0/s640/DSCN1269.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I also machine quilted. And didn't snip any threads in my impatience. Well, lesson learned.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">What? A picture of the finished project, you ask? Hmmm. Of course I don't have one yet (picture, that is, the project is finished). This is where the boys came home. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

We are back up and running! A bit has happened here while I was computerless - and I'll be sharing that soon, but today, we get to meet the lovely Andee of <a href="http://www.andeeeve.blogspot.com/">Bearing Fruit</a>!</div><div id=":7p" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><br />

</div><div class="im" style="color: #500050;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: black;">I love your collages Andee, they are so colorful and cheerful. Could you share a little bit with us about your creative process?</span></b><br />

</div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">Sure! I usually get inspired when I am reading my Bible or when I'm</div><div style="text-align: left;">journaling. I have those moments sometimes where I am reading and</div><div style="text-align: left;">then a verse jumps out at me. I might journal about it or meditate on</div><div style="text-align: left;">its meaning. I then get to drawing. Mostly, I use little figures as</div><div style="text-align: left;">my main "characters" in the pieces. So at this point, I draw the</div><div style="text-align: left;">little figure out in graphite pencil and then color her or him in</div><div style="text-align: left;">with colored pencil. Next I paint thin washes of acrylic paint mixed</div><div style="text-align: left;">with a medium over the colored pencil. Then I cut my figure out with</div><div style="text-align: left;">an x-acto knife. While I am doing this, I usually am thinking about</div><div style="text-align: left;">background colors. I might have already prepped a surface or maybe</div><div style="text-align: left;">not. If I haven't already, at this point I prep and paint my</div><div style="text-align: left;">background. Once I have my figure cut out, I start playing with the</div><div style="text-align: left;">placement of the collaged elements and the figure on the page. I get</div><div style="text-align: left;">to ripping up papers. I play with text. I print stuff out on the</div><div style="text-align: left;">computer or I paint the words by hand. Once I get everything where I</div><div style="text-align: left;">like it, I use matte medium to affix my collaged elements to my</div><div style="text-align: left;">surface.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">I actually took this superfab online class with <a href="http://www.alovelydream.com/">Suzi Blu</a> who totally</div><div style="text-align: left;">inspired me with her awesome techniques. I learned how to do the</div><div style="text-align: left;">technique of using colored pencil and then paint over the figure from</div><div style="text-align: left;">Suzi. I highly recommend her classes. She's a great teacher.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3PRmevmcofqGPB0HcG5fTv8wYuh7VxdAqIt4YpmVhijXFX4UzHcYZirezVGu66lbONqowTLs247RvTrVOwQ8BiRBSCugiNh7DT8a5RAS8fRHJYwzBZeUr3Qnr6yBj2PupPYjIUKRZNhE/s1600/pic+1+a+green+purse.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3PRmevmcofqGPB0HcG5fTv8wYuh7VxdAqIt4YpmVhijXFX4UzHcYZirezVGu66lbONqowTLs247RvTrVOwQ8BiRBSCugiNh7DT8a5RAS8fRHJYwzBZeUr3Qnr6yBj2PupPYjIUKRZNhE/s640/pic+1+a+green+purse.jpg" width="330" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

Your characters are so fun and your technique is so interesting - thank you for sharing!</b></span></b></div><div id=":7p" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><b>In addition to the collages, I notice that you are sewing. Can you tell us a little about that? Is there anywhere we can find your sewn items?</b><br />
<br />
Well, when I first started to blog, I was painting and doing a great<br />
deal of the mixed media pieces. But as I am sure you know, Daphne,<br />
creativity doesn't always follow a straight path! So here I am, I'm<br />
painting. And I get this bee in my bonnet to make this purse. So I<br />
go into the stash and there it is, my pattern and fabric that was<br />
planning to make oh-so-long ago. I make the green purse.<br />
<br />
What can I tell you Daphne, except I was off and running!<br />
<br />
Once I sat in front of that sewing machine, it was like coming home.<br />
I used to sew when I was in 8th and 9th grade in a home ec class. But<br />
I had long since stopped sewing. I had been feeling a bit stuck in my<br />
mixed media paintings. I started to sew, and suddenly inspiration was<br />
everywhere.<br />
<br />
As for where you can buy the sewn pieces I am making, I haven't<br />
officially set up shop yet. I am taking custom orders for friends and<br />
friends of friends. But truth be told, I can't make things fast<br />
enough to actually accumulate them to put them up in an online shop,<br />
craft fair, or brick and mortar. But stay tuned, you never know...!<br />
I guess in the meantime if someone I wants a custom order, they can<br />
e-mail me.<br />
<div class="im" style="color: #500050;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: black;"><br />
</span></b></div><div class="im" style="color: #500050;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: black;">It is true that creativity seems to wind its way through our lives. Your sewn items are just as lovely as your paintings so I think you're on the right track! ;) Now on to somethings I'm a little curious about...</span></b></div><div class="im" style="color: #500050;"><br />
<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: black;">You've given us a few glances into your rockabilly history (which I LOVE!), what is one other thing we might not know about you?</span></b><br />
</div>Hmm...that's a really good question! Well, here's a bunch of things<br />
you probably didn't know about me (in no particular order)<br />
1. In college, I dyed my hair all the time, and one time I dyed my<br />
bangs green. I dyed them back to my natural color because the bangs<br />
were clashing with a lot of my outfits!<br />
2. I pierced my own left ear 4 times when I was in 8th grade-the old<br />
fashioned way: with an ice cube and one of those earrings that they<br />
pierce your ears with at the mall that's sharp as a point on one end.<br />
3. I speak French and Italian.<br />
4. I also dyed my bangs purple!<br />
- What is it with me and the bangs? -<br />
<div class="im" style="color: #500050;"><br />
<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: black;">What are some new techniques or crafts you're interested in but haven't tried yet?</span></b><br />
</div>I am fascinated with (in no particular order) quilting, crocheting and<br />
embroidery. Right now, I'm on a sewing jag. There's all this great<br />
stuff to sew, so I may never stop long enough to try somethin' new.<br />
Although, if the need comes up, I'll get busy. That's what happened<br />
when Mr. Handsome (my fond name for my husband) wanted a handmade<br />
scarf.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNmH0khyphenhyphenu4IJkSgnVLjZymr-xrEB3YVxbJ4ISYlrqDF-j4SNrnkoylNE3oC_wAdau3xifZ-I7dD8AY00xzvix1womNG0EY6Me6xxgdV2rhVVOrfhtYPPA4dFMzJivD2y9kCcgoUDaZ1pI/s1600/pic+2+scarf.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNmH0khyphenhyphenu4IJkSgnVLjZymr-xrEB3YVxbJ4ISYlrqDF-j4SNrnkoylNE3oC_wAdau3xifZ-I7dD8AY00xzvix1womNG0EY6Me6xxgdV2rhVVOrfhtYPPA4dFMzJivD2y9kCcgoUDaZ1pI/s640/pic+2+scarf.jpg" width="480" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: left;">I resurrected my knitting needles (I had made one half of a scarf once</div><div style="text-align: left;">about 5 years ago and dropped the pursuit) But those babies were back</div><div style="text-align: left;">in my hands in no time and away I went. Big thanks to <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/elsteffo#p/u/24/CQwscY6flHs">elseffo</a> at</div><div style="text-align: left;">YouTube for reminding me what to do once I cast on. It was a comedy</div><div style="text-align: left;">show, really. Me playing the same 2 minutes of the video over and</div><div style="text-align: left;">over so I could do it along with the instruction.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div class="im" style="color: #500050;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: black;">Are there any crafty classes/trips/pursuits coming up for you this summer?</span></b><br />
</div>Does September count? If it does, then let me tell you about this<br />
awesome event I'm going to: <a href="http://www.blogsugar11.com/">Blog Sugar</a>. It's a one day event in<br />
Southern California for faith based bloggers. But they explain it way<br />
better on their blog. So I quote them here: "Rachel (the founder of<br />
Blog Sugar) has realized that there was and still is a need for<br />
bloggers to come together, talk social media and renew their passion<br />
for WHY they blog. And Rachel has a desire to provide an atmosphere<br />
for each and every blog-lovin' person. People desire to be purposeful<br />
and intentional about what they do and Blog Sugar was created to come<br />
along side bloggers and encourage them in the journey the Lord has<br />
them on. Inspire. Teach. Grow. That is why Blog Sugar exists."<br />

<div class="im" style="color: #500050;"><br />
<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: black;">What is your favorite source of inspiration?</span></b><br />
</div>I get inspired by what's around me. And from these, I can't pick one<br />
favorite. Here are a few:<br />
1. walking in nature<br />
2. walking in the hills by my house<br />
3. thinking about making cool 1950s dresses, or looking at cool 1950s images<br />
4. looking at fun things other people make. I am really into looking<br />
at anything someone sews, especially if the fabric is patterned. I<br />
also have a major crush on anything felted.<br />
5. i love typography, graphic design and letterpress<br />
<br />
But most of all, I get inspired in the morning when I sit and hang<br />
with my One and only. He teaches me, He guides me, and He loves me.<br />
Unconditionally. Plus, a lot of times, I'll be journaling and I'll<br />
get ideas to make something.<br />
</div><div id=":7p" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiE0kdi088kjugKpIdBNK0VmMFlR3JQDXNVRr6wxaWFcvsrjQvH-yV2oXeTgmKRI6rabh2cIxb3ETHVOy0wEh-vs_k_pWz06pugS-4hihdDzb3TdI8faRLnbCN5xRHujxz89cokqbXcowI/s1600/pic+4+bride+nightie.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiE0kdi088kjugKpIdBNK0VmMFlR3JQDXNVRr6wxaWFcvsrjQvH-yV2oXeTgmKRI6rabh2cIxb3ETHVOy0wEh-vs_k_pWz06pugS-4hihdDzb3TdI8faRLnbCN5xRHujxz89cokqbXcowI/s640/pic+4+bride+nightie.jpg" width="420" /></a></div><div id=":7p" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><br />
</div><div id=":7p" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">I even got the idea and all the how-tos to make a bride-to-be nightie<br />
when I was in my quiet time! I got inspired, and in between reading<br />
verses, I started sketching out designs and figured out how to make it<br />
using a store-bought bra, some ribbons and some sheer fabric.<br />
<div class="im" style="color: #500050;"><br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: black;"><b>I'm always curious about where people create, could you describe your studio/creative space for us?</b></span><br />
</div>The space that I am actually in is totally makeshift. We just moved<br />
about two months ago and are in the midst of putting the finishing<br />
touches on everything. But, with that said, we are blessed to have a<br />
guesthouse behind our little bungalow. We call it the 'casita.' It's<br />
a small space, and it has two little rooms plus a bathroom. Mr.<br />
Handsome has his study in one room, and my craft room is in the other<br />
room. Truth be told, I haven't gotten to spiffin' up my space yet. I<br />
have been deliberately taking my time to put it together so I can see<br />
what I really want and what I need. As I am continuing to work in<br />
here, I'm just about ready to start pulling it all together.<br />
<br />
The barebones of it is: on one wall of the room I have my computer<br />
table with my scanner and printer and assorted officey things in bins<br />
below the table. I turn 180 degrees in my chair and I am facing my<br />
do-everything table. This is where I sew. It's also where I cut out<br />
papers and collage stuff.<br />
<br />
If I look out the window, I see our gorgeous lemon tree. We are<br />
planning to plant a vegetable garden in front of the casita. So the<br />
garden is pretty lovely. And we are working on that too.<br />
<br />
If I had to pick one phrase to describe it all, I'd say "work-in-progress."<br />
<div class="im" style="color: #500050;"><br />
<br />
<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: black;">What is your favorite holiday, and why?</span></b><br />
</div>My favorite holiday is Christmas. I love what it means. I love what<br />
we are celebrating. I love the family time. I love Christmas music,<br />
the decorations, the lights, the festive atmosphere. Especially now<br />
that Mr. Handsome and I are married ( we celebrate our one year<br />
anniversary on May 29th!) It's a whole new adventure together. We are<br />
starting family traditions of our own. Yay. Christmas rocks.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjR7WOWuPmvNMESL0aDkIkECLxL1Q1UqGp9X_gEMajMLeT5rMYWKBMHNJ7FRL-ysItDfRne-Pnj2kLPz0meK7LNewLz7T6H0Urspgz8rO82DrRd5tc2gV2hguMYk_DlCXJGt2yEe9nCspk/s1600/pic+5+faith.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="290" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjR7WOWuPmvNMESL0aDkIkECLxL1Q1UqGp9X_gEMajMLeT5rMYWKBMHNJ7FRL-ysItDfRne-Pnj2kLPz0meK7LNewLz7T6H0Urspgz8rO82DrRd5tc2gV2hguMYk_DlCXJGt2yEe9nCspk/s640/pic+5+faith.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="im" style="color: #500050;"><br />
</div><div class="im" style="color: #500050;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: black;">Your faith really shines through in your work, do you have any advice for those of us that would like to mesh our faith and creativity more?</span></b><br />
</div>That is an awesome compliment Daphne!<br />
<br />
I was a bit torn in the beginning about just how much of myself to<br />
share on the blog. I mean, my main idea was to blog about my crafts.<br />
But I blog about me. And I'm about God. My initial posts where I'd<br />
mention my faith were treading lightly on the subject. I would never<br />
want to come off as "preachy." Meanwhile, I'm looking at a lot of<br />
blogs in my spare time. And more and more I find myself being drawn<br />
in to those where the women showed their love of their creative side<br />
blended with their faith. I started to be moved to share a bit more.<br />
I prayed about it and asked God how. He started to guide me through<br />
it. I'm still on the journey.<br />
<br />
I would say to anyone who would like to do anything on your blog, be<br />
true. Be true to the person that God made you to be. It's been so<br />
much easier for me to just be me on my blog, rather than be me but<br />
only-sorta-and-only-kinda-<wbr></wbr>blog-about-my<br />
faith-but-not-really-so-I-don'<wbr></wbr>t-offend-anyone.<br />
Whew, I'm exhausted just writing that run-on sentence!<br />
<br />
One thing I can say that I really connect with people who are<br />
authentically real on their blogs. I have found some blogs that just<br />
move me deeply because they are so honest and true. I was just<br />
reading today about a guy who had a blog. His wife had a baby and<br />
then she died the next day, or maybe even the same day the baby was<br />
born. He was gonna close up the blog, but then it sort of became his<br />
daughter's 'baby book' and he began blogging about his life as a<br />
single dad, who loved his daughter and really,really missed his wife.<br />
I can't wait to read his blog. From what I can tell, this guy and I<br />
may not see eye-to-eye on a lot of 'stuff', but I can really dig that<br />
he is bein' real.<br />
<br />
That's what it's all about.<br />
<br />
Bein' real.<br />

<br />
Thanks again so much for having me over Daphne! It's been really fun<br />
catching up.</div><div id=":7p" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><br />

<br />
Just wanted to let you know that I should have a computer Monday or Tuesday!<br />
<br />
I haven't got a whole lot done, but I'll be sharing all that in a few days on e I'm back in business with a real computer!<br />
<br />
Until then, <br />

<br />
Our computer situation is going to get tricky for at least the next week...but hopefully at the end of it all I will have a new laptop - yay!<br />
<br />
Just wanted to let you know that I'm not sure if I will have access to post for a week or so. I might be able to from the iPod, not sure...I will still get e-mails for sure, so if you'd like to say "hi", drop me a note!<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEouiHXGgXgICVblceb8TE9Mu3sQUw1uuCeWUPI3LrNArk6jwWb8xy3k0J7kqEkD_E3WjEJdVyT3TO4U3oqJw4h208ke4uvCcmMP_PW7JagGBAcSSPo-lbihXQ-Ks9NeMgNk4SdbUFvTU/s1600/DSC_0642.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEouiHXGgXgICVblceb8TE9Mu3sQUw1uuCeWUPI3LrNArk6jwWb8xy3k0J7kqEkD_E3WjEJdVyT3TO4U3oqJw4h208ke4uvCcmMP_PW7JagGBAcSSPo-lbihXQ-Ks9NeMgNk4SdbUFvTU/s640/DSC_0642.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">Alabama Stitch Book and Alabama Studio Style.</div><div style="text-align: center;">To say that Natalie Chanin is an inspiration to me is a gross understatement. These books and her work are all about hand stitching, using local products and workmanship, slowing life down....serious wonderfulness here folks. If you've never seen her work, check out the website <a href="http://www.alabamachanin.com/">here</a>. </div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxuV0dxAb8itU91l3Hvt9Vr3yTOYpptOV4l-jSZHKvr9SVjykmu-6tdQeYO8CHepUD3oAZnzqIe-LeRINFVtxrgeE4e5blollyeAjoEYZ8Shpc17z36vk03EHl2oCn7fqd9N6xj6yAPGI/s1600/DSC_0647.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxuV0dxAb8itU91l3Hvt9Vr3yTOYpptOV4l-jSZHKvr9SVjykmu-6tdQeYO8CHepUD3oAZnzqIe-LeRINFVtxrgeE4e5blollyeAjoEYZ8Shpc17z36vk03EHl2oCn7fqd9N6xj6yAPGI/s640/DSC_0647.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">This is a spin on one of the projects from the Alabama Stitch Book. A notebook cover! My friend Brian was cleaning out his closets and was kind enough to let me pick through what he was going to take to the thrift store so I could get first dibs!!! I used parts of two knit jersey shirts to make this super easy cover.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIww7uIYMqo8vB2ydfyXfKFpD0h2DFEAe2-bNlfE4Zqaewc7_1MC4tnKZf0PtROV9twBdIoItwlw-w1GHaudMgROJnDurzqlpR04qcb1KBJw2ZLz_I5MtiJus7eZATY_Hqh7gGab631KE/s1600/DSC_0648.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIww7uIYMqo8vB2ydfyXfKFpD0h2DFEAe2-bNlfE4Zqaewc7_1MC4tnKZf0PtROV9twBdIoItwlw-w1GHaudMgROJnDurzqlpR04qcb1KBJw2ZLz_I5MtiJus7eZATY_Hqh7gGab631KE/s640/DSC_0648.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I apologize for the lighting...night photos are not the best option, but sometimes they are THE option, if you know what I mean...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Anywho - this shirt had awesome pockets that I was able to use, so now my cover has a handy dandy pocket to hold my phone or pens or whatever!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgB6cSIegNdFWtZqSwgxuH6PbZ8BKi2rmmkDqyrvwtV369wRZNQdXU7ODjRwyqyMVt6pcQTswm2T9lDAXIkaczrkJ0krK-P72ruL_e3e1uSqv8cQSBFb9fqWbi3uEaJu2pO5X87BRs5Xh8/s1600/DSC_0649.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgB6cSIegNdFWtZqSwgxuH6PbZ8BKi2rmmkDqyrvwtV369wRZNQdXU7ODjRwyqyMVt6pcQTswm2T9lDAXIkaczrkJ0krK-P72ruL_e3e1uSqv8cQSBFb9fqWbi3uEaJu2pO5X87BRs5Xh8/s640/DSC_0649.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">Obviously this one was for me to keep as I don't have the kinks quite worked out...and it would have helped if I had followed the directions, of course, but who has time for directions when you want to get started <i>now</i>?! </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">I do love Natalie's style of imperfection and unfinished edges and will most likely be incorporating some of that 'feel' into my work.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6HZUpCUeT4P5nBGg3WwtS-uywVEn2E4EwWvGpUIHRXhCvqPjUmA3xsJWrAgI3CGddWVa-JF0b11PB0Ua23eprkK8ukvAiiJFYWiz9flw-VPhdo8A7DRCl6Hbt1LKNDLh-h6iT_H1IgEc/s1600/DSC_0644.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6HZUpCUeT4P5nBGg3WwtS-uywVEn2E4EwWvGpUIHRXhCvqPjUmA3xsJWrAgI3CGddWVa-JF0b11PB0Ua23eprkK8ukvAiiJFYWiz9flw-VPhdo8A7DRCl6Hbt1LKNDLh-h6iT_H1IgEc/s640/DSC_0644.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">This guide to crazy quilting along with a few blogs have been what I have spent quite a bit of my time on the last few days. (<a href="http://www.cqnickilee.blogspot.com/">this</a> blog, and <a href="http://www.plays-with-needles.blogspot.com/">this one</a>, in particular!) </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;">All this crazy quilting excitement got started when I finally figured out what to do with some very special scraps of fabric. </div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;">When my Grandmother passed away, I got some of her clothing, some of the things I remember her wearing. I wanted to make something special with them, something for her children (my Dad and Aunt) and the grandkids (myself and two cousins) (it's a small family!). It has been several years now that these have been patiently waiting in a project bag, and the other week it hit me - crazy quilt pillows! Which was great, except I'd never done a crazy quilt in my life! Thank goodness for crafty blogs and helpful books!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfsgwrwXmPzSeY0hh0VnRkgEyAi_WxPLAZmHUj_OVjFAmT96azggZHbToejinnVaBTDe18MXYMVS-aVBwBMvQ06b44uuXlCWIFzlhGV34LZHD5CgKqbgHClCypO2EZxeBbP1gUlboEWsk/s1600/DSC_0643.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfsgwrwXmPzSeY0hh0VnRkgEyAi_WxPLAZmHUj_OVjFAmT96azggZHbToejinnVaBTDe18MXYMVS-aVBwBMvQ06b44uuXlCWIFzlhGV34LZHD5CgKqbgHClCypO2EZxeBbP1gUlboEWsk/s640/DSC_0643.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Here is the first "naked" block (see, I'm already learning the terminology!) - it's naked because it doesn't have any embroidery/embellishment yet. I have seen some <i>beautiful</i> examples of heavily embellished crazy quilts. For these pillows though, since they are the first adventure of this sane girl into crazy quilting and because I want them to be used and loved, I think we'll keep it simple as far as embellishing goes. More soon!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><br />
On the bus the other day, I sat across from a gentleman. (That's a pretty good opener, huh?). So, this gentleman... was around my age (mid-late twenties), he had a buzz cut, mustache and looked like some sketchiness could be in his past and/or his future. That image is where my "judging a book by it's cover" self might have left things, if the bus wasn't warm that morning, and he hadn't taken off his hoodie. (*note, I am not usually a judge a book by its cover person, just so you know. Maybe it would have been better if I had phrased it, "first impression". Hmmm.)<br />
<br />
The second impression surprised me, and I'm quite glad it did. On his left forearm the word Mercy was tattooed in simple lettering. On his right, Grace. I was studying these words (discretely, of course. I mean, I've been known to make an awkward sandwich or two, but I try not to do that with strangers...in public) - so anyway, as I was pondering what surprising choices "Mercy" and "Grace" were to have tattooed on your arms, he reached into his bag to pull out a hardcover book (another surprise). When he did, I saw another tattoo, a bit further up his right arm that said "To Live is Christ". <br />
<br />
To live is Christ. I kept turning it over in my head. To live is Christ....to die is...something. I couldn't remember what that last bit was. I knew Paul wrote it and that it was somewhere in the back of the Book, but I couldn't put my finger on it. So when I got to work, the first thing I did was look it up. To live is Christ to die is gain. Philippians 1:21<br />
<br />
A complete stranger, with whom I shared no (verbal) words, got me to look in my Bible and made my day. Thank you tattooed Sir. Mercy and Grace. Very fitting words for thought this Lenten season, no?<br />
<br />
